~ Something to do with exploration, movement of people or stock, spread of cultures ... exchange and trade, cross-pollination, music, over oceans & time ~ Shipping Channels ... Slavery, tracing connections, making new connections ... Liverpool, New Orleans, Africa, Brasil ... theres no such thing as coincidence, but I attest to the spirits ... I put this together with a guitar tuning that was gifted to me one evening. I thank the south-easterly desert winds and ancient souls for this. (rec. 28/10/12)
2. Brother, Can You Spare A Dime (gorney/harburg) ~
~ A well known song from the Great Depression Era of the 1930′s, originally written for the Broadway musical, Americana in 1931, I heard Ronnie Lanes version first, and was inspired to put together these chords for more of a folk - ragtime walk … It makes me think of the iconic b & w pictures from this era of people gathered in mass out of work, in economic hard times, like now almost, and perhaps how people who once fought for FREEDOM can so easily be forgotten by the country they believed in, or the (false) leaders they were fighting for. With this I pay respect to those who have fought or served with noble aim, you are not forgotten R.I.P (rec. 05/11/12) ~
3. Take Your Stand (trad)
~ This I heard recorded by singer/guitarist Blind Willie Johnson from his New Orleans sessions on 11th December 1929. Aside from the Gospel traditions of tunes like this, I like them in a wider spiritual frame, at the base to alight the fires within. This is about a quest for FREEDOM of the individual soul, and the groups we reside in, through song and sound ... It was a great idea by friend Jason Wyche to make a journey up to a spot on the Mississippi river whilst in New Orleans to record this with a Tascam handheld recorder. (Rec. on 25/10/12)
